The Electoral College May Be The Next Victim Of The 2026 Midterms On Tuesday, Democrats won full control of state government in Pennsylvania, Michigan, Arizona, Wisconsin and Nevada, a shift that could let states effectively bypass the Electoral College before the 2028 presidential election without amending the Constitution.

According to a report from Axios, the Democrats' victories "opened a path to effectively replacing the Electoral College with a national popular vote in time for the 2028 presidential election." The compact binds member states to award all of their electoral votes to the candidate who wins the national popular vote.
