A dengue fever outbreak has occurred at several construction sites in Sanya city, located in China's southernmost island province of Hainan, resulting in thousands of workers being quarantined. According to Chinese media and local workers, the outbreak happened at high-end residential construction sites, including the "Sanya Poly Tianjun" project in the Jiyang District of Sanya city.
Construction at several sites has been suspended, with living quarters and construction areas placed under lockdown. The outbreak is believed to have affected thousands of workers, with some being relocated to local hotels or residential complexes for quarantine and testing.
A worker, who uses a pseudonym for fear of reprisal, reported that nearly 20 busloads of workers have been sent to a hotel, with each construction site relocating about 800 to 1,000 people. The worker estimated that around 4,000 to 5,000 workers are affected by the outbreak.
The Chinese authorities have taken measures to control the outbreak, including environmental disinfection and mosquito and pest control measures. Police have been stationed at the entrance of the construction sites 24 hours a day, preventing workers from entering or leaving.
The mayor of Sanya has also visited the site to give instructions, and drones have been deployed to spray chemicals at the site. The exact number of infected cases remains unknown, as the authorities have not released any figures.
