"Extinction-Level Event": Takeaways From The GOP's Midterm Wipeout Democrats flipped seven Republican-held Senate seats and seized the House on Tuesday , handing President Trump what Punchbowl News called "an extinction-level event" for the GOP.

As of Wednesday morning, NBC News had the Senate at 54-44 with two races still out . In Mississippi, Democrat Scott Colom led Sen. Cindy Hyde-Smith by 43 votes with more than 95% counted. In Alaska, Sen. Dan Sullivan led Democrat Mary Peltola by 1,677 votes with about 80,000 ballots left to count, in a race where the DOJ has been probing claims that Democrats recruited a decoy "Dan Sullivan" onto the ballot, which Peltola denies .

If both break their way, Democrats will hold 56 seats. Election map via AP Elections In the House, Punchbowl expects the Democratic majority to clear 250 seats , which could make it the party's largest since 2008.
