A female wearing a Muslim burqa stood in front of a microphone during the public comment period at a county commissioners' meeting Tuesday in Florida during which some residents spoke against the potential expansion of a local mosque amid concerns over language on zoning and agenda materials, WTVT-TV reported .
The station said the female was "covered head-to-toe in black, with only her left eye visible." She did not speak. 'We ask you to come here and make comments, and that was not a comment. That’s why she was asked to step out.' Instead, the female played a recording of the Islamic call to prayer, the station said.
It appeared on video of the incident that she was holding an audio device under her burqa. The Islamic call to prayer played for nearly a minute before Dave Eggers — chair of the Pinellas County Board of County Commissioners — said over his microphone that county rules require public speakers to deliver verbal comments rather than play recordings, WTVT reported.
