A four-member crew from the Crew Health and Performance Exploration Analog (CHAPEA) project has completed a simulated Mars journey, according to NASA. The crew, consisting of Matthew Montgomery, James Spicer, Ross Elder, and Ellen Ellis, spent over a year testing various systems and managing limited resources.

Their experiences included maintaining crops, dealing with communication delays, and conducting extravehicular activities, all aimed at helping NASA understand how crews adapt to long-duration stays. The insights gained from this project will be used to inform the design of NASA's future Moon Base and plan for missions to Mars.

The crew emerged from their simulated environment for the first time in over a year on October 31, 2026, marking the end of their journey. NASA will utilize the knowledge gained from the CHAPEA project to improve its future space missions.
