NASA has featured a spiral galaxy, IC 342, also known as the Hidden Galaxy, in its Astronomy Picture of the Day. IC 342 has been the subject of misunderstandings due to the crowded and dusty foreground of the Milky Way, with some theories suggesting it was ejected from the Local Group.

However, this theory appears to be based on inaccurate accounting of the Milky Way's foreground. The galaxy has its own dust that intermittently blocks the glow of hydrogen gas, indicating the presence of bright, young stars. Additionally, magnetic field maps of IC 342 suggest that magnetic fields may play a significant role in the formation of spiral arms, a major galactic puzzle.

The image of IC 342 was captured by Artem Mironov, and the explanation was written by professional astronomers, including Keighley Rockcliffe, Robert Nemiroff, Jerry Bonnell, and Cecilia Chirenti, as part of NASA's Astronomy Picture of the Day service.

The image provides a glimpse into the fascinating universe, showcasing the beauty and complexity of galaxies like IC 342.
