NASA has announced a $1 million challenge for students to design a Moon Base, with the goal of cultivating the technical skills of tomorrow's aerospace workforce. The challenge, which is open to student teams at US high schools and post-secondary schools, invites participants to contribute designs for the Moon Base across six categories, including power generation and storage, construction, and life-support systems.
The challenge is part of NASA's efforts to build a permanent human presence on the Moon, which will pave the way for future crewed missions to Mars. Registration for the challenge is open until January 25, 2027, and participants can register through the NASA STEM Gateway.
The Office of STEM Engagement at NASA Headquarters designed the challenge in collaboration with the Moon Base Program, and the Institute of Competition Sciences will administer the challenge.
