# Paris Riots: French Police Officer Engulfed in Flames After Molotov Cocktail Attack During Mass Protests

Posted BY: T Murray

Violent clashes erupted in Paris on Saturday after a rioter reportedly threw a Molotov cocktail at a line of French riot police, setting an officer's protective equipment ablaze during demonstrations over rising living costs and conditions in schools.

The dramatic incident occurred near Porte de Charenton in Paris's 12th arrondissement, as France experienced its third consecutive weekend of widespread protests.

Video footage captured by French journalist Luc Auffret and shared on X reportedly shows an incendiary device exploding among police officers. One officer appeared to be engulfed in flames across his shield, helmet and protective clothing, while another officer fell backward during the attack.

## Molotov Cocktail Attack Targets French Riot Police

According to the Paris police prefecture, a group of several hundred violent demonstrators positioned toward the rear of an authorized protest march began attacking officers as the crowd approached Porte de Charenton.

Police reported that rioters threw various projectiles, including at least one Molotov cocktail, directly toward security forces.

Masked individuals wearing black clothing were also reportedly seen using hammers to break loose paving stones before throwing them at police. Other participants launched fireworks during the confrontation.

French riot police responded by deploying tear gas and carrying out baton charges in an effort to disperse the violent groups and regain control of the area.

## French Officer Reportedly Injured in Firebomb Attack

French news outlets BFMTV and Entrevue reported on footage showing the incendiary device exploding near officers during the confrontation.

According to those reports, at least one police officer suffered a leg injury after being exposed to the flames.

British newspaper The Sun reported that flames burned around an officer's left leg for approximately 30 seconds following the petrol bomb attack.

The full extent of the officer's injuries was not established in the supplied reports.

The incident has raised serious concerns about the dangers facing police officers assigned to control increasingly volatile street demonstrations.

## Approximately 320,000 Demonstrators Take to Streets Across France

French authorities estimated that approximately 320,000 people participated in demonstrations nationwide on Saturday, including roughly 70,000 in Paris.

Protesters have cited concerns about the rising cost of living and conditions within the education system as major reasons for taking to the streets.

Although many demonstrations remained peaceful, violent confrontations were reported in Paris, Lyon and several other locations.

The disturbances reflected growing tensions between groups of demonstrators and law enforcement as another weekend of nationwide protests unfolded.

## Fires and Street Violence Spread Across Paris

Additional disorder was reported around Place de la République, where trash containers, a kiosk and a vehicle were set on fire.

The unrest added to the challenges facing French authorities as police attempted to maintain public safety while allowing authorized demonstrations to proceed.

The attacks involving incendiary devices, fireworks and paving stones represented a significant escalation beyond peaceful protest activity.

Police continued responding to outbreaks of violence as large crowds gathered in the capital and other French cities.

## Growing Security Concerns Amid Continued French Protests

The violent scenes in Paris have brought renewed attention to the difficulties authorities face when peaceful demonstrations are disrupted by smaller groups engaging in attacks against police.

The reported firebomb attack near Porte de Charenton illustrates the potentially severe consequences of using incendiary weapons during crowded street confrontations.

With demonstrations continuing over economic pressures and education concerns, French officials face the challenge of protecting the right to peaceful assembly while preventing further injuries, property destruction and attacks on law enforcement personnel.

The incident underscores the heightened security concerns surrounding the ongoing unrest in France.
