POLAND has deployed “significant” forces to the Russian border after “disturbing” movements sparked fears of a sudden armed incursion.
Soldiers were mobilised after “individuals with flashlights” were spotted near the frontier zone, Polish PM Donald Tusk said.
He said the unidentified individuals were moving from Kaliningrad, the Russian enclave sandwiched between Poland and Lithuania along the Baltic coast.
Police and counter-terrorist forces were immediately dispatched to the area to support local Border Guard officers.
In a statement, Tusk said: “Just after midnight, I received information from the Border Guard that disturbing movement had been observed on the Polish-Russian border, to the north. Individuals with flashlights.
“We quickly mobilised the appropriate forces and resources there and managed to prevent any attempted provocation.
