Gaza's Population Grew Last Year and There Wasn't a Famine, Hamas's Own Figures Show, Debunking Claims That Most Gaza Deaths are Women and Children

According to data from Hamas's Ministry of Health, the population of Gaza grew by 1.2 percent in 2025, which is a faster rate than most of the world. This growth undermines claims that a deadly famine occurred in the region, as populations typically do not grow rapidly during such crises.

The data also shows that the number of nonviolent deaths in Gaza in 2025 was less than in 2022, further contradicting claims of a humanitarian disaster. The mortality figures, analyzed by the Australia/Israel & Jewish Affairs Council, reveal that the majority of casualties in Gaza were military-aged males, not women and children as often claimed.

The Hamas ministry reported 24,650 total deaths in 2025, with 73.4 percent being men and 26.6 percent being women. This contradicts the widely disseminated claim that women and children accounted for 70 percent of casualties. The data also disputes the claim that Israel is prosecuting a genocide in Gaza, as the population growth and mortality rates do not meet the threshold for such a designation.

More than 75 military professionals have signed an open letter stating that the allegations of genocide do not meet the established definition and standards, and are unsupported by established facts. The growth of Gaza's population and the lack of evidence of famine conditions suggest that the situation in the region is not as dire as often reported.
