Polish President Karol Nawrocki has cut short a trip to Senegal and is returning to Warsaw amid a dispute over the leadership of the Constitutional Tribunal, the nation's highest court. According to the Metropolitan Police Headquarters, officers are carrying out activities at the tribunal's premises to restore "public order" after a change in leadership.
The change in leadership was reportedly led by Prime Minister Donald Tusk, a political adversary of Nawrocki, who claimed the move was necessary to prevent lawlessness. Tusk stated that "restoring the rule of law is our duty" and that decisive action was required after years of alleged lawlessness under the Law and Justice party.
The dispute centers around the appointment of a new judge, Maciej Berek, whose qualifications have been questioned by the Law and Justice party. The Constitutional Tribunal's social media account has issued a statement denying the legitimacy of the new leadership and claiming that the takeover is unlawful.
The situation remains unresolved, with Nawrocki returning to Poland to address the situation.
