President Donald Trump has shifted the blame for the significant Republican losses in the 2026 midterm elections to the candidates and the unpopularity of the Iran War. In a recent interview, Trump stated that the candidates he endorsed did not fully support him, which may have contributed to the losses.

He also acknowledged that the Iran War played a role in the election outcome, with many people disagreeing with the short-term consequences of the conflict. The midterm elections resulted in Democrats regaining control of both the House and the Senate, with 54 seats in the Senate and 228 seats in the House, as of the latest count.

Trump had dedicated significant time to campaigning for Republicans, but has since distanced himself from the results, claiming that if he were on the ballot, the outcome would have been different. He expressed surprise that the Republicans did not perform better, despite his efforts to rally support.

Trump has vowed to use his veto power to combat the Democrat majorities, stating that he can work with Democrats on certain issues, but not on others, such as open borders, men playing in women's sports, and transgender issues. He acknowledged that the Democrats ran a strong campaign, saying they "fought hard" and have been opposing him for a long time.

The election results mark a significant shift in power, with Democrats gaining control of both chambers of Congress.
