Romania is seeking to strengthen its partnership with the US, according to its national security adviser, Ambassador Marius-Gabriel Lazurca. Lazurca recently visited Washington, DC, to convey Romania's openness to deeper cooperation with the US.

He expressed optimism about the future of US-Romania relations, citing the benefits of their strategic relationship. Lazurca acknowledged that Romania shares a significant border with Ukraine, making it vulnerable to the spillover effects of the ongoing war between Russia and Ukraine.

He expressed support for efforts to bring the war to an end, including those initiated by President Donald Trump. However, Lazurca emphasized that a lasting peace requires more than just a ceasefire, stressing the importance of achieving a sovereign and free Ukraine.

Romania's proximity to Ukraine and its experience with communism have shaped its pro-American outlook. The country has been a member of NATO since 2004 and is committed to increasing its defense spending. Lazurca praised President Trump's approach to NATO, agreeing that European countries should take greater responsibility for their own security.

Romania is prepared to play a more significant role in NATO, aligning with Trump's calls for greater burden-sharing among member states.
