Election Night Viewer’s Guide: Poll Closings and What to Watch Hour by Hour

The US is set to hold elections for all 435 House seats, 35 Senate seats, and governorships in 36 states. Republicans currently hold narrow majorities in both chambers of Congress, but forecasters believe Democrats have a chance to take one or both back.

President Donald Trump has been campaigning across the country, urging voters to treat the election as if he were on the ballot. The first polls are set to close at 6 p. m. EST, with initial results coming from Indiana and Kentucky, both of which are considered red states.

However, any signs of trouble for the GOP could first appear in these states. At 7 p. m. EST, polls will begin to close in six states, including Florida, which is expected to provide early clues about the election's outcome. In Florida, Republicans are favored to win, but the margin of victory in areas with large Hispanic populations, such as Miami-Dade, will be closely watched.

The state's early vote and mail-in ballot numbers are expected to be reported within 30 minutes of the polls closing. Other key races include the Senate election in Georgia, where Democratic Sen. Jon Ossoff is facing Republican Mike Collins, and the gubernatorial election in South Carolina, where Republican Rick Jackson is facing former Atlanta Mayor Keisha Lance Bottoms.

The election results will continue to roll in throughout the night, with polls closing in additional states at 7:30 p. m. and 8 p. m. EST.
